Home Backup Power in Bermuda: What It Actually Takes to Ride Out an Outage

The household below is an illustrative worked example, not a specific customer. The wattages, runtimes and specifications are real — taken from manufacturer data and typical appliance draw — so you can substitute your own numbers and get a usable answer.

Most people shopping for home backup power in Bermuda start with the wrong question. They ask “how big a generator do I need,” when the answer depends entirely on a question they haven’t asked yet: what do you actually intend to keep running, and for how long?

This page works through that properly for a typical Bermuda household, then shows where the Lion Summit and the Lion Safari each land.

First: Outages here aren't seasonal

It’s worth setting the frame, because it changes what you should buy.

A low-pressure system with gale-force winds in February 2026 left roughly 3,000 customers without power, with crews working past 2am. The island-wide outage in 2023 ran up to six hours across all of Bermuda and came from a transformer fault — no storm at all. Pole fires, salt contamination on insulators and winter gales account for outages every year, storm season or not.

So the planning assumption isn’t “one hurricane per year.” It’s several outages per year, mostly overnight, mostly between four and eighteen hours. That’s what to size for.

The Household

A three-bedroom home, two adults, two children.

Step one: the load audit

Here’s what the household actually wants running during an overnight outage, with real draw figures.

Overnight outage — 14 hours, living normally

What a typical three-bedroom Bermuda home needs to keep running.
What Draw Hours Energy used
Full-size fridge/freezer ~50W average* 14 700Wh
Wifi router + modem 15W 14 210Wh
Two phones charging ~5W each — 30Wh
Four LED bulbs 9W each 6 216Wh
Ceiling or box fan 40W 8 320Wh
Laptop 45W 4 180Wh
Total 1,656Wh

*The fridge number is the one people get wrong. A fridge doesn't draw its nameplate wattage continuously — the compressor cycles on and off, typically running 30–40% of the time. A unit with a 150W compressor averages closer to 50W over an hour. It's still, by a distance, the largest single item on the list.

Afternoon cut — 4 hours, staying at work

Nothing spoils in four hours. What you lose is the working day.
What Draw Hours Energy used
Fridge ~50W average 5 250Wh
Router + modem 15W 5 75Wh
Laptop 45W 5 225Wh
Phones ~10W — 20Wh
Total 570Wh

A Lion Summit holds 665Wh — enough for this with room to spare, and it recharges from the wall in 4–5 hours, so it's ready again before the evening.

Step two: What that means in practice?

The 14-hour overnight outage — essentials only

Strip it to what genuinely matters at 2am: fridge, router, a couple of lights, phones.

Total: roughly 1,030Wh.

A Lion Safari holds 1,612Wh. It covers this comfortably, with about a third of its capacity still in reserve when the power comes back.

The 14-hour outage — living normally

Add the fan, the laptop, the rest of the lights, and you’re at 1,656Wh — fractionally over what a Safari holds.

This is the honest finding, and it’s the most useful thing on this page: a Safari alone gets a Bermuda household through a long outage if you’re a little disciplined about it. It does not get you through one while living exactly as normal. Anyone telling you a single portable unit does both is selling, not calculating.

The Safari-XP expansion battery adds 2,688Wh for a combined 4,300Wh. At that point the same household runs normally for roughly two and a half days, and the fridge alone would go 105 hours.

The four-hour afternoon cut

Different problem entirely. Nothing’s going to spoil in four hours. What you lose is your working day.

A Lion Summit holds 665Wh. It covers this with room to spare, weighs 18 pounds, and recharges from the wall in 4–5 hours — so it’s ready again before the evening.

Where each unit lands

Lion Summit — 665Wh

The Summit is not a whole-home unit and it’s a mistake to buy it as one. Its fridge runtime is about 17 hours on a mini fridge — a full-size kitchen fridge would drain it in roughly 13 hours with nothing else connected.

What it’s genuinely good at: keeping you working and connected through a short cut, and going with you afterwards. 45W laptop, around 13 full recharges. Phone, 59 recharges. Pure sine wave output, so a CPAP or any sensitive electronics are safe on it. Bluetooth app for charge level. One year warranty.

Buy the Summit if: your outages are short, your priority is work continuity and communications, or you want something one person carries to the boat and the beach.

Lion Safari — 1,612Wh

The Safari is the household unit. The number that matters isn’t just capacity — it’s the 3,000W continuous output with a 6,000W surge, which is what lets it start a fridge or freezer compressor. Smaller units trip on the inrush current and never get there.

Recharges in 2.3 hours from a wall outlet, 2.7 from solar. Four AC outlets. 3,500+ cycles — a full charge and discharge every day for the better part of a decade. Holds its charge over a year sitting unused, which matters for something you may not touch between outages. Five year warranty.

Buy the Safari if: you want the fridge, freezer, lights and wifi to stay on through an overnight outage, or you need to run a CPAP repeatedly — it’ll go about 28 hours on a 50W machine.

Safari + Safari-XP — 4,300Wh

The combination is what you buy if a multi-day outage would be genuinely disruptive — a home business, medical equipment, or a full freezer you can’t afford to lose.

Roughly two and a half days of normal household use. 105 hours of mini-fridge runtime. 75 hours of CPAP. Add a 24V 100W solar panel and, in Bermuda sun, you’re recharging faster than most households discharge.

One important detail: the Safari requires a solar panel rated above 36VMP and below 60VOC — that’s our 24V panel. A 12V panel will not charge it. Check the voltage before you buy.

Both run indoors. That’s the whole argument against petrol.

Neither of these is an engine. No petrol to store on a small property, no exhaust, no carbon monoxide, no queuing at the pump three days into an outage, nothing to pull-start in the rain. They sit in the kitchen and run silently.

That’s not a minor convenience on a Bermuda lot. It’s the reason people switch.

Frequently asked questions

How much backup power does a Bermuda home actually need? For essentials through a 14-hour overnight outage — fridge, router, lights, phones — around 1,000Wh. To live more or less normally through the same outage, closer to 1,700Wh. For multi-day outages, 4,000Wh and up.

Will a solar generator run my whole house? No, and treat anyone who says otherwise carefully. A Safari’s 3,000W covers a fridge, freezer, lights, wifi, TV, fans and small appliances. It will not run central air conditioning, an electric water heater or an electric range.

How long will it run my fridge? A full-size fridge draws roughly 50W averaged over an hour once compressor cycling is accounted for. That’s about 32 hours on a Safari, or 86 hours on a Safari plus XP, with nothing else connected. Mini fridges run considerably longer.

Do I need an electrician? Not to use one — plug devices straight in. You’d only need one if you want the unit wired into your panel so selected circuits switch over automatically. Our licensed electrician partners assess that at no charge.

What about hurricane season specifically? It matters, but it isn’t the main reason to buy. Most Bermuda outages happen outside storm season. A quiet forecast year is also the calmest time to get set up — stock is on the island, and nobody’s scrambling.
